Saturday
Saturday dawned darkly overcast. Our first race was at 9:00am. It was scheduled for 8 laps, but was actually a qualification session which would determine the starting positions for the afternoon VRG Formula Ford Challenge Feature race. The field took a dry but threatening pace lap, and as they came to the green they drove into a deluge. Fortunately, everyone survived and the rain slowly stopped, but the track stayed wet. Shane finished fourth on the track but set the fastest lap of the race at 2:20.005; 0.004 of a second faster than Mike Hummel, 0.370 over Doug Voss and 0.701 on Joe Griffin. These would be the major players in the afternoon.
Just before lunch, there was sprint race 3, on a very wet track. Shane started on the pole. On the first lap he spun in the Inner Loop in front of the whole field, missing everyone, and ending up facing the right direction. He made his mandatory pit stop to explain his indiscretion to the Steward, then raced back to 8th position and the race's fastest lap at 2:38.320. Doug Voss won, followed by Brian Graham.
The feature race was exciting and bizarre in equal doses. Please read the detailed account following these pictorials. Shane was credited with the win, but only after a great show of sportsmanship by Doug Voss and Mike Hummel. A splendid barbecue and awards presentation for the FF crowd followed. This was the final VRG Formula Ford Challenge Series event of the season.
An eventful weekend, and still one more day to go. Back to the motel for rest.
